PediECMO Scientific Oversight Committee

The purpose of the Scientific Oversight Committee (SOC) is to support pediatric ECMO research by providing manuscript and grant reviews. The objective is to ensure that the research project has the potential to address the knowledge gap and to be published in a high-impact journal.

Instructions for Scientific Review

  • The researcher will email the SOC chair (pediecmo.soc@gmail.com) with the manuscript, grant proposal, or survey.

  • The SOC chair will assign the review to two SOC members, according to area of expertise and availability.

  • The SOC members will provide written feedback to the SOC chair as well as a recommendation (endorsed as is, pending changes, decline to endorse).

  • Reviews and comments will be anonymized before being send to the researcher.

 

Manuscripts

  • PediECMO is expected to be a co-author of research projects that were presented at a PediECMO meeting and that received meaningful feedback. 

  • The researcher will submit the draft manuscript.

  • Two SOC members will review the manuscript and will submit their recommendation to the SOC chair.

  • The SOC chair will anonymize and merge the reviews’ comments and will provide the (endorsed as is, pending changes, decline to endorse) to the researcher.

  • Turn-around time: 2-3 weeks.

Grant Applications

  • The research project is encouraged to be presented at previous PediECMO meetings.

  • The researcher will submit the specific aims, research strategy, and a draft letter of support.

  • The SOC chair and two SOC members will review the proposal using the NIH template.

  • The SOC will make recommendations to the Executive Committee for a final decision (support as is, pending changes, decline to support).

  • The SOC chair will provide the researcher with the anonymized reviews and the Executive Committee’s decision.

  • Research updates are expected to be presented at PediECMO meetings (at least once a year).

  • PediECMO is also expecting to review the future manuscript and be a co-author.

  • Turn-around time: 3-4 weeks.

Surveys

  • The SOC will review the protocol, the survey, and the draft invitation, to make sure it meets the expectations. 

  • The protocol and the survey will be reviewed by two SOC members, who will make recommendations to the SOC chair for a final determination. 

  • The survey results are expected to be presented at the next PediECMO meeting.

  • PediECMO is also expected to be acknowledged in the manuscript (or be on the byline if feedback was substantial).

  • Turn-around time: 2-3 weeks.
